CROMOVELA BY CARLOS CRUZ DIEZ (2014)
ARTWORK INTEGRATED TO PUBLIC SPACE IN PANAMA CITY, PANAMAIn 2014 Carlos Cruz-Diez was invited to incorporate a work into phase III of the Cinta Costera, a road and pedestrian corridor built on land reclaimed from the sea. The conditions of the placing required the piece to be resistant to the elements, since it would be in constant exposure to the sun, wind and saltpeter.
The artists created a “Cromovela”, a monumental structure 11 meters high specially designed for the location and built from a section of a steel tube 2 meters in diameter. Cut and painted according to the artist’s design, the work changes shape and colors as the observer moves around, taking on a life of its own.
Articruz was in charge of the production of the work, in alliance with the Panamanian metalworking company Industrias Tello Pérez, who were in charge of assembling the structure according to the curvatures established in the design.
Once assembled, the piece was taken to Articruz, where it was prepared to ensure its longevity and a perfectly smooth surface according to the artist’s requirements. Finally, color by color was painted by hand and a coating was applied to protect it from the inclement weather and the passage of time.
Currently the work is located on the Cinta Costera, in excellent conditions of conservation.
