CHROMOSTRUCTURE BY CARLOS CRUZ-DIEZ (2013)
ARTWORK INTEGRATED TO THE EXTERIOR FACADE OF THE KENEX PLAZA BUILDINGIn 2013, the architect Fernando Ponce de León and the promoters of the Kenex Plaza building in Panama City came to Articruz to request from Carlos Cruz-Diez a work for the facade of the building, then in project. The purpose was to cover the three floors dedicated to parking with a work that distinguished the building. After almost three years of work, the building and the work were officially inaugurated in March 2016.
The location of the building on a corner in a central area of the city with wide views over two streets, provided the opportunity to develop a Chromostructure specially conceived to integrate into the architectural design and also function as an intervention on the urban space.
This Chromostructure is one of the largest of its kind created by Carlos Cruz-Diez and the largest work ever built in Articruz. It is an assembly of tubular elements and triangular fins, arranged as a grating on the north and east facades of the building, covering the three parking levels.
Articruz took care of the architectural plans of the artwork, designing its construction and assembly system, painting, assembling and, finally, installing the artwork at the Kenex Plaza.
From the street, the Chromostructure offers a changing color experience for the passerby, while the interior of the parking lot offers a spectacle to the drivers and pedestrians who pass through it.
